Barrett: I Would Reinstate Collective Bargaining
Posted by Big Eddie | Monday, April 02, 2012

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett appeared on The Ed Schultz Radio show today to talk about his upcoming recall campaign for the Democratic nomination, and potential campaign against Scott Walker.

Mayor Barrett left no doubt he would work to repeal the anti-collective bargaining law put in place by Republican Governor Scott Walker, saying:

In February of 2011, Scott Walker started a civil war here in the state of Wisconsin... and he did so by a surprise attack.  Announcing -- and these are his words -- that he was going to drop the bomb.  And what he meant by that is that he was going to go after the ability by public sector employees to collectively bargain in the state of Wisconsin.

Barrett noted Walker never mentioned his collective bargaining plans on the campaign trail.  When asked if he would reinstate the collective bargaining laws, Barrett said:

I would reinstate collective bargaining rights.  I think that people, including public sector employees, have the right to collectively bargain and the right to collectively organize, and I would certainly make that one of my priorities.

Listen to it.

Walker is in trouble even because he has been waging warfare on the public sector to use the collective bargaining process for setting their contracts. Walker did NOT campaign on this position. He campaigned on "jobs, jobs, and jobs" but he did everything except help businesses create jobs in Wisconsin. Tax breaks were given to wealthy Wisconsinites and companies. The jobs went elsewhere in Wisconsin. Here is a John Nichol's article about the number of jobs lost in Wisconsin. It seems as if Wisconsin has been a great job loser under Governor Walker.

The bottom line is that just because you implement all the talking points of the right wing's anti-worker, anti-union, anti-collective rights agenda, including big tax cuts to the wealthy does NOT mean that the state will create more jobs. What the right winged agenda will do is destroy our fundamental rights to healthcare, public sector unions, and a middle class existence. All we will get as a society are a few rich people at the top who make all the money and profits. All the rest of us with W-2's and a family to feed will face increased poverty, lack of government services from public schools or healthcare and declining opportunities to better ourselves in the economy. This is the society Governor Walker is creating in Wisconsin. This is the type of America Mitt Romney will create for our country. The GOP vision of America is a South African one where the rich Boers live in walled compounds with armed guards surrounded by slums where everyone else lives. If this is the America you want vote GOP. I will be voting for President Obama because I believe in a strong middle class and a strong America with opportunity for everyone who chooses to better themselves by work and education.

Not only did Walker illegally act in taking away these collecting bargaining rights, he actually had the audacity to think he could control the banks and prohibit the unions from debiting dues from union members bank accounts. The last time I checked the IRS was the only entity in this country that has ever had the legal authority to come between a person and their individual bank accounts. So Scott Walker actually thought he had more power than the federal government to interfere in people's lives. The audacity of this fool!
