Romney Crowd Applauds Death Penalty
posted by Ed Staff | Tuesday, July 10, 2012

Mitt Romney spoke to Colorado town hall meeting and answered a question on the death penalty from a man who identified himself as the local DA. In addressing the story of a heinous crime, Romney said, "I happen to believe that the death penalty tends to prevent some of the most heinous crimes," to which the audience cheered.

This comes from the man who said he would work to overturn Roe vs. Wade. Just goes to show, the Republicans only care about your life until you're born. Then you're on your own.

JD,

Until we have a justice system in this country that is truly blind we will continue to have controversy. We have corrupt law enforcement and corrupt courts and judges. What about the hundreds of death row inmates that have been found not guilty by dna evidence after the fact under the innocence project. They were all given trials and convicted by a jury of their peers, there was a grand jury, there were witnesses. Yet they didn't do it and science proved it. Your take on this is too simplistic. What about the judge in Pennsylvania who was being paid a "head count" for sending teenaged kids to prison for drug offenses and many of them receiving harsher penalties than some murderers?? This is why the death penalty as appropriate punishment will always be controversial.

republicon policies on health care, social security and medicare, will mean death sentences for many people. Who do we hold accountable for that, willard?

Spare us please, mittens will say whatever the particular crowd wants to hear. Is the questioner really the DA? What a set up!

TAX THE RICH, surprised mittens even knew about the ruling, and I think the kid was 12, but will look it up.

Okay Ed, I agree with much of what you say, but Republicans have a valid point here and Democrats have ruined their chances of enacting necessary and reasonable reform by opposing common-sense ideas like capital punishment. 'Dirty Harry' became a cultural icon for a reason.

The death penalty in california is a joke as it is in most states. The reason for this remark it cost the state's tax payer more to kill somebody than to put him or her in jail for life with no palroe. The person on death row usually have a state lawyer and all the fees come to the tax payers. This is true of all the states by what I have heard and read. The gop=tea baggers want to cut and gut everything, but they wont stop this waste money. Lets kill the killer and support the private prisions that carry out the killing. These people are just idiots and really dont know the system and a side bar how many people that are on death row have been found not guilty. There has been a lot by what I have been seen on the news. The death paenalty has no parole or pardon once it done..

just my humble view

Why is it that states and countries that don't have the "death penalty" have lower rates of capital crimes? What do you expect from a bunch of Repubs? They are thoroughly reactionary. It's kind of funny to hear this from a guy who once described himself as a "progressive" in the early 90's.

Yes, the wedge issue could be why is it that the "pro-lifers" can also be cheering for the death penalty, are warhawks (or in Mr. Willard Mitt Romney's case a chickenhawk), keep loaded firearms, support limiting health care, etc.

wedge issues...do not confuse a wedge issue with concern for unborn babies. you go too far in saying "the repubs only care about life until your born. then your on your own".

the repubs don't care about any life unless it was created by a multimillionaire & then its the multimillionaires option whether to end it or not. the repubs only care about the fetus for as long as it remains a wedge issue. once it stops being a wedge issue, the fetus can be easily disposed.
