House Democrats prepare to vote on health bill Posted on 7/16/2009
House Democrats are preparing to advance legislation that would deliver on President Barack Obama's promise to remake the nation's costly health care system and cover some 50 million uninsured.
On the heels of the Senate health committee's approval Wednesday of a plan to revamp U.S. health care, three House committees with jurisdiction over the issue were shifting into action.
Votes Planned Thursday Votes were planned Thursday in the Education and Labor and Ways and Means committees on a $1.5 trillion plan that majority House Democrats presented this week.
The legislation seeks to provide coverage to nearly all Americans by subsidizing the poor and penalizing individuals and employers who don't purchase health insurance.
Paying for Health Care House Democrats are looking for ways to pay for overhauling health care.
One plan would raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans to levels not seen since the 1980s.
Tax Increase on the Top 1.2% The tax increase would be limited to the top 1.2 percent of earners - families that make more than $350,000 a year.
But it would raise a total of $544 billion over the next decade, covering a little more than half the cost of the health care plan.
The bill would create three new tax brackets for high earners, with a top rate of 45 percent for families making more than $1 million.
That would be the highest income tax rate since 1986, when the top rate was 50 percent.
The plan would honor Obama's campaign promise not to raise taxes on families making less than $250,000.
