Durbin: Deadline Looming for Health Care Bill Posted on 11/22/2009
Sen. Dick Durbin, D-IL, says the proposed health care overhaul must pass the Senate by the end of the year, so that lawmakers can begin to concentrate on the economy and job creation.
Durbin said if debate goes into next year, passage of the health care bill becomes more complex.
Vote Passes 60-39 The Senate, by a vote of 60-39, agreed on Saturday night to begin debate after the Thanksgiving break.
A key complication is opposition from moderates who say they will vote against the final bill if it includes a Public Option.
Durbin Open to Changing Public Option Durbin said he was open to changing the government-run public health insurance option to ensure that the measure passes.
Durbin said that the goal is to inject competition into the health insurance market in order to bring down costs and expand coverage to people unable to afford coverage now.
Durbin said there were "many variations on the theme."
He said, "We are open because we want to pass the bill."
Sen. Lieberman Comments Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-CT, voted Saturday to start debate on the bill.
He repeated Sunday that he would join a Republican filibuster if the public option remains in the proposal when it comes time to end the debate.
Lieberman said, "I don't think anybody feels this bill will pass in its current form."
Sen. Lieberman said that the public option would be an unnecessary step now as the United States faces high unemployment and a growing federal deficit.
He said, "I don't want to fix the problems in our health care system in a way that creates more of an economic crisis."
Lieberman appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press."
The threat of voting against a Public Option has annoyed liberal lawmakers.
Some have threatened to vote against the bill if there is not a Public Option.
Sen. Brown Comments Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-OH, said he didn't think "we'll get to that."
But Sen. Brown warned Democratic leaders not to make too many concessions.
Brown said, "I don't want 4 Democratic senators dictating to the other 56 of us and to the rest of the country - when the public option has this much support - that (a public option is) not going to be in it."
Sen. Brown appeared on CNN's "State of the Union."
