President Barack Obama kicked off a White House jobs forum on Thursday.
Obama said he's "open to every demonstrably good idea" to reverse the worst job losses in decades.
But the President said the government's resources are limited and that growth ultimately must come from the private sector.
President Obama Comments President Obama said, "So we can't make any ill considered decisions right now even with the best of intentions."
He said, "We have to be surgical and we're going to have to be creative." Obama appealed to his audience of academics, business and union leaders and local officials to help him find "the biggest bang for the buck."
130 Leaders Attending President Obama summoned 130 corporate executives, economists, small-business owners and union leaders to the White House to sound out ideas for accelerating job growth during the worst labor market in a generation.
Rep. Cummings Comments Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-MD, said, "The main thing that people are concerned about is jobs."
Cummings said, "It is the number one issue."
Valerie Jarrett Comments Senior adviser to Obama, Valerie Jarrett said, "We want to make sure it is not just the public sector doing this in a vacuum."
Jarrett said, "It's important we engage the private sector as well.
Democrats Want More The nation's unemployment rate at 10.2 percent, which is a 26 year high.
Many congressional Democrats want Obama to do more to directly help people they say perceive the president's economic initiatives as mostly benefiting big business.
Rep. Kaptur Comments Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-OH, said, "What's a bit ironic to me is they were able to figure out how to help the big banks without any summit, but now that they are talking about helping people, it is a year later and they need a summit."
Kaptur asked, "What is that all about?"
Rep. Kaptur is Co-chairman of the bipartisan Jobs Now! Caucus, which has at least 128 members.
Congressional Black Caucus Concerns 10 members of the Congressional Black Caucus boycotted a House committee markup on Wednesday of a financial regulatory reform bill to protest the administration not doing more to aid minority communities and businesses that are hurting economically.
Rep. Waters Comments Rep. Maxine Waters, D-CA, "We have not been forceful enough in our efforts to protect the most vulnerable of our population. That stops today."
Waters said, "I'd like to see a jobs bill yesterday."
