Obama to Meet with Senate Democrats on Health Care Bill Posted on 12/15/2009
President Obama invited all Senate Democrats to the White House for a meeting Tuesday afternoon that holds promise of a unity event.
Obama needs all 60 of them to hang together to give him the neccessary votes to overcome stalling tactics from Republicans united in opposition to the sweeping health overhaul measure.
Sen. Reid Comments Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-NV, promised to deliver.
Sen. Reid said, "I'm confident that by next week we will be on our way toward final passage of a bill that saves lives, saves money and saves Medicare."
Reid promised that any final compromise with the House would completely close a gap in Medicare prescription drug coverage generally known as the "doughnut hole."
Sen. Reid did not say whether Democrats had decided to drop the proposal to expand Medicare for uninsured Americans as young as 55.
But several senators said it appeared inevitable.
Sen. Rockefeller Comments Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-WV, said, "We're not going to get all that we want but we're going to get so much more than we have."
The biggest sticking point is the opposition from Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-CT, who caucuses with the Democrats.
Sen. Lieberman Comments Sen. Lieberman said, "But the important thing is I'm for health care reform, and if we get together, we're going to deliver a health care reform bill that will provide the ability to get health insurance to 30 million people that don't have it now."
Sen. Harkin Comments Sen. Tom Harkin, D-IA, said, "Democrats may have to do what Mr. Lieberman wants."
Sen. Feingold Comments Sen. Russ Feingold, D-WI, said, "Things are not moving in the right direction."
Still Disputes There are still disputes over abortion and the importation of prescription drugs from Canada and other countries as the Senate entered a third week of debate on the legislation.
Vote Tuesday Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-ND, led the effort to lift a long-standing ban on the importation of prescription drugs from Canada and elsewhere.
A vote was set for late Tuesday for the Dorgan amendment.
