GOP Calls on White House to Scrap Health Care Bills

Posted on 2/9/2010

Even though President Obama has invited Republicans to the White House to discuss health care legislation, GOP leaders are calling on the Administration to scrap the health care bills.

GOP Letter
The House's top 2 Republican leaders openly questioned Obama's sincerity in a letter to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

They hinted they might skip the White House meeting if Obama uses the Democratic bills as the starting point for discussions.

House GOP leader John Boehner, R-OH, and GOP Whip Eric Cantor, R-VA, wrote, "Assuming the president is sincere about moving forward on health care in a bipartisan way, does that mean he will agree to start over?"

Boehner and Cantor wrote, "If the starting point for this meeting is the job-killing bills the American people have already soundly rejected, Republicans would rightly be reluctant to participate."

White House Reaction
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs released a statement contending that Obama is "open to including any good ideas that stand up to objective scrutiny."

Gibbs said that Obama has sought Republican input since early last year.

He said the President remains interested in hearing ideas that the GOP believe will advance the cause of health care reform.
