Senate Votes on $15 Billion Jobs Bill Posted on 2/24/2010
The Senate votes on a $15 billion jobs bill on Wednesday.
The legislation is expected to pass after getting 62 votes on a procedural vote Monday.
Passage of the Senate bill was made possible by 5 GOP defections who supported the test vote.
The measure is the first of several jobs bills promised by Democrats.
Passage would give President Barack Obama and Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-NV, a victory.
Sen. Reid Comments Sen Reid, "We have a jobs agenda, not a jobs bill."
Reid said. "We're going to have more votes, and create more jobs."
Sen. Menendez Comments Sen. Robert Menendez, D-NJ, said, "Several of those ideas were Republican ideas, so it's nice to see that there are Republicans who are willing to not follow blindly their leadership in their overall goal of filibustering."
Bill Details Companies that hire the unemployed would claim new tax breaks under the bill.
The proposal would exempt businesses hiring the unemployed from the 6.2 percent Social Security payroll tax through December and give them an additional $1,000 credit if new workers stay on the job a full year.
It would also extend federal highway programs through the end of the year and make a $20 billion cash deposit into the highway trust fund to make up for shortfalls from lower-than-anticipated gasoline tax revenues.
250,000 Jobs The new hiring tax credit could spur about 250,000 new jobs, according to economist Mark Zandi of Moody's Economy.com.
