Pelosi to Democrats: Back Health Bill Even if it Hurts Posted on 2/28/2010
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, urged her colleagues to back a major overhaul of U.S. health care even if it threatens their political careers.
The call to arms underscores the issue's massive role in this election year.
Pelosi said lawmakers sometimes must enact policies that, even if unpopular at the moment, will help the public.
Speaker Pelosi Comments Speaker Pelosi said, "We're not here just to self-perpetuate our service in Congress."
Pelosi said, "We're here to do the job for the American people."
She said, "It took courage for Congress to pass Social Security and Medicare, which eventually became highly popular."
Pelosi said, "And many of the same forces that were at work decades ago are at work again against this bill."
She called on members of her party to make a bold move on health care even without GOP help.
Pelosi said, "Time is up. We really have to go forth."

Bipartisan Bill Speaker Pelosi said, "Bipartisanship is a two-way street."
Pelosi said, "The bill can be bipartisan, even though the votes might not be bipartisan."
She said, "We were all very hopeful that we could come to consensus a year ago."
Pelosi said, "A year later we're closer to what Republicans were suggesting at that time -- an exchange, and not a public option."
She said, "This legislation has accommodated many of their views. Even though we may not get their votes."
Pelosi said, "And so what we've had is the year of trying to strive for bipartisanship, as I say over 100 Republican amendments in the bill."
She said, "And the Republicans placed their own bill on the floor, here in the House, which insured 3 million. Our bill insures over 30 million. So we have a different value system here."
Pelosi made the comments on CNN's "State of the Union."
