White House: Simple up or down vote on health care Posted on 2/28/2010
The White House called for a "simple up-or-down" vote on health care legislation Sunday.
White House health reform director Nancy-Ann DeParle signaled President Barak Obama's intention to push the health care bill under Senate rules that would overcome Republican stalling tactics.
Nancy-Ann DeParle Comments DeParle said, "We're not talking about changing any rules here."
She said, "All the president's talking about is: Do we need to address this problem and does it make sense to have a simple, up-or-down vote on whether or not we want to fix these problems?"
DeParle said, "I believe that the president will keep fighting and that the American people want to have this kind of health reform."
She said, "This president is paying for reform, unlike similar measures in the past, first of all. And secondly, it's something that over 10 years is going to reduce the deficit."
