Kyl: Unemployment Benefits Make People Not Want To Get A Job

Posted on 3/2/2010

Sen. Jon Kyl, R-AZ, argued on the Senate floor Monday that unemployment benefits discourages people from job-hunting "because people are being paid even though they're not working."

Sen. Kyl Comments
Sen. Kyl said, "Unemployment insurance doesn't create new jobs. In fact, if anything, continuing to pay people unemployment compensation is a disincentive for them to seek new work."

Kyl said, "I'm sure most of them would like work and probably have tried to seek it, but you can't argue that it's a job enhancer."

Sen. Bunning Blocks Help for Unemployed
Sen. Jim Bunning, R-KY, continued to block a $10 billion aid package to extend federally funded unemployment benefits and other popular provisions on Monday.

The move has united Democrats and sent Republicans hiding from the political backlash.

Furloughs for DOT Workers
Sen. Bunning's filibuster has blocked an extension of federal highway funding.

That forced the Department of Transportation to put more than 2,000 workers on unpaid furloughs in 17 states, as well as the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.

Bunning Flips Bird to Reporter
When an ABC News producer tried to talk with the Sen. Bunning on Monday, he flipped him the middle finger instead.
