Democrats Look to Obama for Health Care Momentum

Posted on 3/3/2010

President Barack Obama unveils his revised version of a health care bill at the White House.

Republican Proposals Included
It's expected to include several Republican proposals.

The White House says President Obama will repeat why reform is so crucial and what it would mean for American families and businesses.

Obama will restate his preference for a comprehensive bill.

Details of Plan
The Obama plan would extend health coverage to about 30 million uninsured Americans.

President Obama's plan bans the insurance industry from denying coverage for the ill.

The proposal expands pharmaceutical benefits for the elderly and give lower-income people subsidies to help them afford coverage.

It would be paid for by raising taxes on upper-income Americans and finding savings from Medicare.

Momentum for Democrats
Democratic congressional leaders feel confident that they could revive the bill and deliver it to Obama's desk, before the Easter recess begins March 29.

Sen. Pryor Comments
Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Arkansas, said, "I like the idea that the President is working with Republicans and trying to find common ground."

Sen. Pryor said, "I think that's a good place to be for him, I think that's what the American people want to see."

Sen. Reid Comments
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-NV, said, "We're anxious to get health care done, which we will get done."

Sen. Landrieu Comments
Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-LA, said she is comfortable using reconciliation to advance a narrower package of changes to the legislation.

Sen. Landrieu said, "The general feeling in our caucus is we've worked very hard, this is a very reasonable, general approach to health-care reform, that the status quo is wholly unacceptable, and that we're hoping to move forward."
