Senate Takes up Unemployment Insurance Extension Posted on 3/9/2010
The Senate takes a key test vote Tuesday on extending unemployment insurance for the long-term jobless.
There are about 60 popular tax breaks for individuals and businesses that expired at the end of last year.
Details of Measure The measure also prevents doctors from absorbing deep cuts in Medicare payments.
The proposal extends health insurance subsidies for the unemployed.
And it gives cash-strapped states help with Medicaid, the federal-state program providing health care to the poor and disabled.
$66 Billion for Unemployment The unemployment insurance alone will cost $66 billion through December.
Extends Tax Breaks The bill would extend the tax breaks through 2010, at a cost of about $26 billion.
The total cost of the measure is about $148 billion.
