Democrats to Reconciliation on Health Care

Posted on 3/12/2010

Senate Democrats announced they would use budget reconciliation to try to pass the health care bill.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-NV, formally notified Republicans that he would seek to pass the legislation by "reconciliation."

Sen. Reid Comments
Sen. Reid wrote in a letter to Sen. Mitch McConnell, "Many Republicans have spent the past year mischaracterizing the health reform bill and misleading the public."

He said, "We plan to use the regular budget reconciliation process that the Republican caucus has used many times."

Reid said, "Though we have tried to engage in a serious discussion, our efforts have been met by repeatedly debunked myths and outright lies.

He said, "At the same time, Republicans have resorted to extraordinary legislative maneuvers in an effort not to improve the bill, but to delay and kill it."

March 18 Deadline
The White House has been pressing the House to cast its crucial vote before March 18, when Obama is due to leave on a trip to Indonesia and Australia.

But White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that the timeline could slip.

Robert Gibbs Comments
Gibbs said, "If it takes a couple of days extra, we'll be happy to have it passed then too."

CBO Score
The Congressional Budget Office said Thursday the Senate health bill would cut the deficit by 118 billion dollars and cost 875 billion dollars over 10 years.
